At the time our Tlingit ancestors fled their homes in Sit'eeti Geeyi (Glacier Bay), they had been settled there for some 15,000 years. This was a civilization that flourished in one of the harshest environments on the planet, where sophisticated survival technology such as watercraft, snares and specialized fishing gear were part of their life. Deep reverence and an intimate dependence for all things in nature made them devout trustees of their environment, bound to protect and preserve the delicate ecosystem.
So it was not by chance that in 1879 John Muir asked the Tlingit to guide him through the severe and wondrous world of Glacier Bay. Who knew better the land and its natural treasures? And more than a century later, we are still guiding visitors through this Great Land.
